WHO WE ARE
The American Academy of HIV Medicine is a professional organization that supports the HIV practitioner and promotes accessible, quality care for all Americans living with HIV disease. Our membership of HIV practitioners and credentialed HIV Specialists™, HIV Experts™, and HIV Pharmacists™ provide direct care to more than three-fourths of HIV patients in the US.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
AAHIVM believes in giving HIV frontline practitioners the support, resources and educational opportunities they need for providing optimal care for those living with HIV disease.
WHAT WE DO
AAHIVM’s educational and professional development programs help HIV care providers remain current with HIV’s rapidly evolving treatment landscape. AAHIVM helps members access a variety of CME/ACPE opportunities on both HIV and non-HIV topics – most of them free or discounted to AAHIVM members – through a diverse mix of educational vehicles, including online courses, seminars and articles; clinical and practice management periodicals; publications such as Fundamentals of HIV Medicine; regional workshops and meetings, and conferences.
The Academy’s provider credentialing program is the only one of its kind in the US, offering clinicians the ability to become certified as an HIV Specialist™ (“AAHIVS”), HIV Expert™ (“AAHIVE”), or HIV Pharmacist™ ("AAHIVP"). The certification is achieved by meeting experience and education requirements, as well as successfully completing a comprehensive exam on HIV-specialized medical care. This program is offered independent of AAHIVM membership.
AAHIVM is the only network of frontline HIV care providers inclusive of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners and pharmacists offering numerous opportunities for peer-to-peer connection. The AAHIVM Web site, www.aahivm.org, houses a “members only” intranet where members share important information via message boards, articles, chapter meeting schedules and more.
AAHIVM leverages the unique perspective and the powerful collective voice of HIV health care providers to address policy issues having impact on HIV care practice and HIV care delivery. The AAHIVM policy department works with both state and federal policymakers to advise them on issues such as reimbursement, care & treatment, drug accessibility, workforce and prevention education.
