Institutional Testing

AAHIVM offers the use of its HIV Specialist™ certification exam
to institutional training programs as a  non-Credentialing testing instrument for that institution’s trainee providers who are either entering or completing an HIV-specific training experience.   Testing is available at any time of the year, with the exception of May and June (due to exam form conversion updates each year).  The exam can be self-administered by the trainee, or administered locally at the training institution in a proctored or non-proctored environment, at the discretion of the training supervisor.  AAHIVM provides all necessary testing materials and scoring services.

The Exam

The test utilized for trainee testing is the most recent form of the HIV Specialist™ exam.  The exam is a statistically sound and legally defensible measurement instrument, developed and annually updated by panels of practicing HIV care providers nationwide, under the supervision of a professional third party testing firm.  The exam contains 125 multiple-choice questions, and is offered in a written booklet format only for this program (online trainee testing is not available).

Exam Prep / Testing Resources For Trainees

The Academy’s regular measurement programs adhere to a "knowledge management" approach to testing, mirroring problem solving activities that would occur in the actual treatment of patients.  AAHIVM testing instruments are designed with this approach in mind; that skilled providers of all kinds often need to access technical resources when solving complex clinical situations.

Accordingly, AAHIVM recommends (but does not require) that trainees be given access to any clinical resource materials that they might reference in the actual care of patients.  The AAHIVM Fundamentals of HIV Medicine 2012 Edition  is ideal for this purpose, and serves as an excellent everyday clinical resource.  The publication may be ordered in addition to the exam, to support learning, test prep and test completion.   Please note that AAHIVM exams are not developed in direct association with Fundamentals.  Additional information about the Fundamentals publication can be found HERE.

FUNDAMENTALS OF HIV MEDICINE TEXT 2012 $195/copy (this is the “Member” rate which applies to training institution purchases).  An additional 10% discount applies for 5 or more copies ordered together.  AAHIVM will generate an invoice to the training institution upon request.  Balance must be remitted before any test materials or publications are distributed.

Results

Scores will be available within 4 weeks of test completion, and will be provided in writing directly to the trainee, and in aggregate to the test administrator.  The passing standard applied to the scoring of trainee exams will be the most recent passing standard established by the AAHIVM Credentialing Governance committee for application to the normal certification program.   Results generated from the use of the Academy’s exam under this program are for the sole use of the institution, and the Academy makes no explicit or implied statement of a trainee’s aptitude or fitness for clinical practice, regardless of the score or result earned.  Information on scoring policies and the annually-revised passing standard can be found HERE

Exam Feedback

A post-examining result breakdown, based on four primary knowledge “domains” covered on the exam, is available to provide feedback to the trainee or the institution.  This optional “Diagnostic Score Report” is available for a modest additional fee, and is ordered individually (after results are reported) for each trainee using this form.  The report provides general areas of strength and weakness in the trainee’s exam performance.  Due to the fact that the testing instrument is used for the Academy’s formal credentialing process, exact answer feedback is not available, nor is the answer key.

Additional Terms & Conditions

1.    By requesting trainee testing services from AAHIVM, training institution administrators and all trainees who will be tested agree to all instructions, notices and terms and conditions as stipulated herein.
2.    All terms and conditions of the primary Credentialing program shall also apply to trainee testing, as published HERE, except as made irrelevant or superseded by the specific terms and instructions herein.
3.    Trainees are not required to meet the normal elements of eligibility for AAHIVM Credentialing (i.e., currently treating 20 HIV patients, 30 credits of HIV related CME, etc.).  Correspondingly, trainees in this program will not be awarded the Academy’s Credential upon successful completion of the exam.  If a trainee candidate does meet the normal eligibility requirements for the Academy’s credential, the HIV Specialist™ designation can be awarded for successful completion of the exam.

5.    Trainees who participate in this testing program agree that their result data will be shared with their training program administrator.   AAHIVM warrants that no other party will have access to any information about a trainee's testing activity or results, regardless of exam score (with the exception of publicly posting providers who pass the exam and who have earned the full certification; see item 3 above.)
6.     All exam materials are the property of AAHIVM, and must be returned in their entirety for scoring to commence.  Copying, withholding, or unauthorized distribution of any element of the test booklet is strictly prohibited at any time.   Violation of this policy can result in forfeiture of fees, withholding of any associated test results, and/or disqualification of the institution from the program.
7.     AAHIVM reserves the right to revise or amend the above terms as needed, and at any time, with reasonable notification to any institution actively engaged in examining.
