Between November 13 and 15, 2008,
the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM) sponsored a series of
meetings in Washington, DC to encourage greater routine HIV screening
nationwide. These meetings were undertaken as a strategy to support
the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) revised recommendations on HIV
screening issued September 22, 2006 that called for routine screening
for adults, adolescents, and pregnant women ages 13-64 in health care
settings. These recommendations were under-scored in August 2008 when
the CDC, through new technology, revised upwards the national the number
of new infections, suggesting that the epidemic is worse that originally
thought.
